Background of the Study
Intergenerational communication is a key mechanism for the transmission of cultural and linguistic heritage. In Osun, the Yoruba language is deeply rooted in community traditions and social practices. Effective communication between elders and younger generations not only preserves linguistic forms but also reinforces pragmatic competence—the ability to use language appropriately in various contexts (Akinola, 2023). Traditional intergenerational exchanges often involve the use of proverbs, respectful address, and indirect speech acts that imbue the language with nuanced pragmatic meaning. However, modern influences such as urbanization, digital communication, and changing social dynamics are altering these traditional patterns. Younger speakers may adopt more direct and globalized forms of expression, potentially diminishing the culturally rich pragmatic cues passed down through generations (Akinola, 2023). This study examines the effect of intergenerational communication on the pragmatic competence of Yoruba speakers in Osun by analyzing conversational interactions, conducting interviews, and performing discourse analysis. The goal is to assess whether the erosion of traditional communication practices affects the effective use of Yoruba in social contexts and to identify strategies to strengthen intergenerational transmission.
Statement of the Problem
Modern communication trends are reshaping intergenerational exchanges in Osun, posing challenges to the pragmatic competence of Yoruba language users. As younger generations adopt more direct communication styles, there is a risk that the nuanced pragmatic cues traditionally transmitted by elders—such as honorifics and proverbs—may be lost (Akinola, 2023). This shift can lead to a decline in effective language use in social interactions and a weakening of cultural identity. Limited empirical research exists on the impact of these changes, necessitating a systematic investigation into how intergenerational communication affects pragmatic competence in Yoruba.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the current state of intergenerational communication in Yoruba communities in Osun.
To evaluate its impact on the pragmatic competence of younger speakers.
To recommend strategies to enhance effective intergenerational language transmission.
Research Questions

What changes in pragmatic competence are observed among younger speakers?
What measures can improve intergenerational language practices?
